All dogs should be groomed every 4 to 8 weeks (double coated dogs can get away with 10 to 12 weeks if they are being regularly brushed at home). This prevents unnecessary discomfort caused by undercoat compaction, matting, dirty coats and excessively long nails. The Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 states that “A person shall not - a) do or fail to do anything, or cause or permit anything to be done to an animal that causes unnecessary suffering to, or endanger the health or welfare of an animal. Or b) neglect, or be reckless, regarding the health of welfare of an animal. Scheduling regular grooming appointments will ensure the best health and care for your dog.

There is no length taken off the coat during a mini/maintenance groom. The mini/maintenance groom includes shampoo, conditioner, wash and dry, nails trimmed, paw pads cleared, hygiene area cleared and feet and eyes tidied. The full groom includes all of the above as well as cut and style of your choice.

You can usually see the fur clumped together in matts. You will be unable to brush or comb through the fur from the root and you will not be able to separate the fur to see the skin underneath. This is extremely painful for your dog. Matting causes the clumps of fur to pull the skin really tight and restrict the blood flow which causes pain and can lead to hot spots and skin infections as well as hide fleas, ticks and thorns. In this case it is essential to shave the matts off which will lead to a “pins and needles” sensation on this skin and can cause the dog to shake excessively and lick the affected area. In some cases when the matt is shaved off and the blood flow recirculates, bruising occurs and in some rare cases haematoma. Matting, and the negative side affects and after affects, can be easily avoided with regular grooming appointments as well as brushing and combing your dog daily at home.

We do not offer this service at Groomies Dog Spa as it can be a very uncomfortable and lengthy process for the dog

We will always try our best with difficult dogs. Please let us know any history of aggression when booking so that we can allocate extra time to give the dog lots of breaks and reassurance during the groom. We recommend that difficult dogs attend every 4 weeks until they get used to the grooming process. In some cases we will have to stop the grooming appointment if the dog becomes too distressed or aggressive. We will not force the dog to endure the entire grooming process if he cannot handle it (See Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013). If the appointment needs to be cut short you will be notified straight away to come and collect your dog.

Nail trimmings are included in every groom unless we are asked not to do so. Anal glands can be expressed during the groom when requested by the owner (at no extra cost) however we do not routinely express the glands as we feel if there is no problems being caused by them they should be left alone.
-
If you notice fleas before your appointment please let us know and cancel your appointment. Your dog will need to be treated for fleas before booking a grooming appointment.
-
Ideally a puppy should be groomed from the age of 3 months so that they can get familiar with the grooming process from a young age. We recommend waiting two weeks after their last set of vaccinations before attending.
-
The appointment time will vary depending on breed, coat condition and temperament. If the dog is extremely nervous we will always give extra time so that they can take breaks throughout the groom and not get overly stressed.
-
We do not use drying cages at Groomies Dog Spa. We have crates available to be used only if a dog feels more comfortable being crated (this is only for dogs who are crate trained). Otherwise we have an open play pen and beds for your dog to enjoy while they wait to be collected
-
This is generally not a good idea as it distracts the dog and causes them to move and wriggle to try and get closer to you (and away from being groomed). You are more than welcome to have a look around the spa when dropping your dog off but it is best to then leave and come back to collect at your allocated time.
-
We have treats available for the dogs at the spa however if your dog has allergies or diet restriction it is best to bring their own treats. Please also ensure your dog has been brought to use the toilet before attending, this will ensure they are more comfortable throughout their appointment.
